This term my daughter has been assigned a project at school and her topic is facts and trivia relating to Wales.
My first impression was how boring, she could have had somewhere more interesting than Wales. However, I will admit that she has told me a few interesting details about Wales already.
For instance, the name of Wales actually originates from the Cymraeg word of Gwalia, which translated means “Homeland”.
Wales is a relatively small country compared to some and apart from it’s border to England is completely surrounded by sea. To the south is the Bristol Channel, with St. George’s Channel to the west and finally the Irish Sea to the north.
There have been many fine actors who have been born in Wales, including Sir Anthony Hopkins, the very fine Richard Burton and the beautiful Catherine Zeta Jones.
Of course Catherine has escaped Wales for the delights of the USA, but she often pops back and stays at Hotels in Wales. She has also been known for her Self Catering Wales escapades when she visits her family.
Catherine however doesn’t just stay in Wales, she also enjoys her UK Family Holidays with her celebrity husband and her 2 children. It’s not uncommon for them to visit a local pub or two for a little lunch and join in with everybody else in the pub, doesn’t sound very showbiz to me.
I deviate a bit and have come off the subject. This must be a trait that runs in the family as this is a major problem for my daughter too.
She has a wonderful imagination, but unfortunately when she is writing any stories or essays, she really goes off the subject and loses the theme of her story.
Funnily enough, only last week her English teacher had severe words with her about the standard of some of her work. It’s funny in my day a vivid imagination was something to praise, not be quashed.
My next instalment on the delights of Wales will follow soon as soon as my daughter gets on with the job in hand. For now though she is quite content writing a short story about killing dragons – probably due to the fact that she has just completed a picture of the Welsh flag!!
When you decorate, keep a few things in mind. Not only is your house looking to get decorated, it is also looking to get embellished with a few things that are useful. It is necessary to strike this delicate balance between beauty and utility. One of the things that definitely fits this bill is a world globe which is not only an artifact but also an object of use.
There are several different shapes and sizes that a world globe comes in. when you are trying to place it in a particular room you have to ascertain that the design of the model that you have bought and the room concerned match adequately. Or opt for a model with a wooden base, installing it right on the floor. The base of course could be fashioned out of steel or stones of both ordinary and precious kinds.
There are available in the market nowadays bases crafted out of glass or even acrylic. These models actually can be installed anywhere in the house, starting from the living room to someone’s personal room or even in the office room or the study. They serve the function of decoration and are fairly attractive artifacts.
There are other models too. These would include ones which go on a table with a pen and paper stands attached to them. Some are available in other sizes so choose accordingly for your needs. There are ones which also illuminate by themselves.
Use these with teaching geography and other lessons. Good models have a central light or lights for each world zone that you wish to highlight in the course of your lessons. They or other models often have a 3-dimensional view with some regions raised on the surface of the globe to ark them out clearly.

The Great Depression was a period of economic and social devastation that started in the US with the Wall Street stock exchange collapse on October 29th, 1929, the day that has come to be well-known as Black Tuesday.
The great depression facts, record that these poorest and hardest of times which were to follow, would last for many years, until the beginning of the Second World War, at which time many nations began pouring huge sums of money into the new war driven economy, eventually bringing the unprecedented worldwide slump to a end.
What mustn’t be forgotten of course is that in those days, there was no social support. If you were penniless and hungry, there was nowhere or no-one to turn to. It was under such circumstances as these that one of the most shocking depression statistics emerged that 50% of all kids didn’t have enough food, clothing, shelter or medical care.
For most people, too poor to put food on the table, the only recourse was the soup kitchen, where people queued all day long for a bowl on meager, thin, watery soup. People were reduced to scavenging amongst the rubbish bins for something, anything to eat.
Industry ground to a halt, virtually. Because people didn’t have any money, they couldn’t afford to buy anything. With no income coming in from sales, businesses were forced to lay workers off, and eventually, to put themselves into liquidation.
It’s African-Americans that were always first to lose their livelihoods. For those who have had the chance to stay in work, wages have been dreadfully low. Depression pictures reveal that the average wage for a farm worker was $216 per year, whilst a doctor earned $3822.29.
The president at the beginning of the great depression was Herbert Hoover and as it can now be imagined, he was not a popular man, being considered by many for doing too little and not managing to avert the crisis.
The name of Hoover was taken and used for some results at the time, as settlements or shanty towns that sprang everywhere called “Hoovervilles, or the soup ” cocktail ” that starving people might make when they went to a restaurant, diverted the waitresses attention, made a soup of all that was left on the table top (tomato sauce, water, pepper, salt) and drink it, whilst her attention was still unfocused, a creation that has come to be well-known as “Hoover Soup.” A pathetic but true fact of great depression.
